Graphic Journal Club

A monthly creative practice where drawing becomes a way to slow down, observe yourself and reconnect with your inner world.

Drawing can be more than making beautiful pictures.

For me, drawing has never been about perfection.

It has always been a way to understand what I am feeling, to collect memories, to process change and to create a space where I can simply exist without expectations.

For more than twenty-five years I have been filling sketchbooks with drawings, words, colours, symbols and self-portraits.

Those sketchbooks slowly became my Graphic Journal.

Today I’d love to invite you to start your own.

What is a Graphic Journal?

A Graphic Journal is a place where words and drawings meet.

It doesn’t matter whether you know how to draw.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t opened a sketchbook in years.

A Graphic Journal is not about creating beautiful pages.

It’s about paying attention.

Sometimes you’ll draw yourself.

Sometimes you’ll write a sentence.

Sometimes you’ll only choose colours.

Little by little, those pages become a visual archive of your life.

Why Graphic Journaling?

Life moves fast.

Graphic Journaling offers a moment to stop.

A moment to notice.

A moment to play.

A moment to reconnect with your creativity.

Over time this monthly practice becomes a gentle ritual that helps you observe yourself with curiosity instead of judgement.

About the Graphic Journal Club

The Graphic Journal Club is an online community where we meet twice every month on Zoom.

People join from different countries, different backgrounds and with very different drawing experiences.

Some are artists.

Some haven’t drawn since childhood.

Everyone is welcome.

The monthly Graphic Journal Club worksop

Once a month we explore a different theme through guided prompts, drawing exercises and moments of reflection.

Each workshop combines creativity, observation and self-discovery.

You are free to participate at your own pace.

There is never a right or wrong way to draw.

Introvert Session

The second monthly meeting is quieter.

We simply spend time drawing together.

Sometimes following open prompts.

Sometimes continuing previous pages.

Sometimes just enjoying the comforting presence of other people quietly creating alongside us.

If you’ve ever found it easier to work when someone else is quietly working too, you’ll probably enjoy these sessions.

What happens during a session?

Every session follows a gentle rhythm.

We arrive.

We slow down.

We begin with a short grounding exercise.

We warm up our hand with a simple drawing.

We explore the monthly prompt.

We draw.

We reflect.

If you feel like it, you can share your page with the group.

There is never any pressure to speak or to show your work.

What you’ll need

A sketchbook, notebook or journal.

Your favourite pens, pencils or art supplies.

A quiet place.

An internet connection.

That’s all.

Is this for me?

You don’t need to know how to draw.

You don’t need expensive materials.

You don’t need to be “creative”.

You don’t need to keep up with everyone else.

The Graphic Journal Club is for anyone who wants to build a sustainable creative practice with kindness and curiosity.

About me

My name is Nicoz Balboa.

I’m an Italian-born artist and graphic novelist living in France.

I’ve been keeping Graphic Journals since 2000.

My books, workshops and artistic practice all grow from the same belief:

Drawing isn’t only something we make.

It is also a way of listening.

The Graphic Journal Club is where I share that practice with others.

“I guess that, if I think about it, what makes the Graphic Journaling a self-care practice is the possibility to enter a very personal inner-space (inside ourselves and inside the journal) while also nurturing the artist inside ourselves. Taking this time to Graphic Journal offers a still moment in a safe dimension in which we can be ourselves while expressing all the feelings. Drawing doesn’t have to change the world. Sometimes it simply changes the way we look at ourselves.” Nicoz Balboa
