Portraits 2019/2020

Portraiture has always been an important part of my practice. Rather than pursuing realism, I’m interested in expressive lines, unexpected colours and the emotional presence of a face. These portraits move between observation and interpretation, often using fluorescent pigments, coloured paper and loose, painterly marks.

A growing gallery of portraits made during and around the Covid years. Some were suggested by people through Instagram, others were chosen because they inspired me or had shaped my imagination. The collection includes Hunter Schafer, Mike Ehrmantraut, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Toni Morrison, Thom Yorke, Eleven, Zerocalcare, Harry Potter, Christine and the Queens (Redcar), Mahmood, Sarah Lucas and many others.
